College Grants

We are pleased to announce that the Slovak Catholic Sokol will make available a total of $40,500 in college scholarship grants to eligible members in 2010. Previous recipients of Slovak Catholic Sokol scholarship grants may reapply for a 2010 grant; however, per Convention mandate - a student may receive a maximum of two (2) Slovak Catholic Sokol scholarship grant awards in each category

    A total of 30 Slovak Catholic Sokol grants of $1,000 each will be available, two Theodore and Mary Jane Rich Memorial Scholarships one each for a male and female in the amount of $2,500 each, two Emil Slavik Memorial Scholarships one each for a male and female in the amount of $2,500 each, one Joseph and Mary Spernoga Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $500 and one Slovak Catholic Sokol (SCS) Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $500.

Eligibility

 

  1. Applicant must be a member of the Slovak Catholic Sokol in good standing, holding a permanent Life Insurance Certificate in the amount of not less than $3,000, and has been a member for at least five years.

  1. One parent must be a member of  the Slovak Catholic Sokol.
  1. All applicants for the Slovak Catholic Sokol, Theodore and Mary Jane Rich Scholarship, Emil Slavik Memorial Scholarship, Joseph and Mary Spernoga Scholarship and the SCS Memorial Scholarship Grants must have completed one semester of undergraduate studies as a FULL TIME student at an accredited college, university or professional school or a student currently enrolled full time in a graduate or professional degree program.
  1. Applicants for the Theodore and Mary Jane Rich Grants must have at least one parent of Slovak ancestry to qualify and must be majoring in the medical curriculum.
  1. Applicants for the Emil Slavik Memorial Grants must have one parent of Slovak ancestry and both parents must be members of the Slovak Catholic Sokol to qualify and must be majoring either in liberal arts, the sciences, pre-law, pre-medical or business curriculum.
 

Application

 

Candidates must complete the Request Form and return it by the deadline date of February 9, 2010.

Upon receipt of the REQUEST FORM, the Slovak Catholic Sokol Home Office will screen all the requests as to their eligibility. Current certificate holders can upgrade to the minimum required life insurance coverage by March 22, 2010. All who qualify will receive an application from the Home Office. Deadline to request an application is February 9, 2010. Upon receipt of the application, the applicant must complete the application as required and fill in all necessary information. The completed application must be returned and received at the Home Office before March 31, 2010 with a clear, small (2"x3" wallet size) head and shoulders photograph.

Winners of our 2010 scholarship grants will be announced in May, 2010 and checks will be issued to winners some time in July, 2010. Since 1972, a total of 1,622 members received a total of nearly $1,157,250 in scholarship grants. Our scholarship grants are just another example of Sokol fraternalism and our concern in assisting our young people in their quest for a good education.

Disqualification

An applicant who neglects to submit or complete any part of these requirements before the established deadline will automatically be disqualified.

 

Acknowledgment

An acknowledgement of the Grant, should be made in writing by the recipient as soon as possible, if you are awarded a Grant.

 

Return of Grant

If for any reason the Grant is not used by the recipient, the entire (or portion of) grant not utilized must be returned.
